Banner Fire Residents Back Home

Posted Thursday, July 3rd 2014 @ 12pm

An estimated 200 homes in the area at the eastern edge of Julian were ordered evacuated as a result of a brush fire that broke out late Thursday morning.

The San Diego Sheriff's department says reverse 9-1-1 calls were made to homes in the Whispering Pines and Kentwood areas and deputies also went door to door to alert residents to evacuate.

As of The 4th of July, Cal Fire says the fire had burned 217 acres and was at least 40-percent contained. The fire was first reported shortly after 10:30am off of Highway 78 in the Banner area.

Air tankers and helicopters helped firefighters on the ground...working to keep the flames from spreading to homes.

Firefighters say two homes were destroyed on Woodland Road in Whispering Pines.

An outbuilding was also destroyed.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.  Due to the fire, Julian's 4th of July parade and celebration was cancelled.
