Body Found in Water at Oceanside Beach

Posted July 10th, 2014 @ 9:14am

A body discovered in the water of an Oceanside beach Thursday morning is the same 22-year-old man who disappeared the night before off a Carlsbad beach.

Oceanside police report that a person walking along Buccaneer Beach, near South Pacific and Cassidy streets, discovered the body in the water and called 911 at about 5:30 a.m. Firefighters responded and confirmed the victim was deceased.

The victim's family came to the beach and identified him as the same man who had gone missing the night before. His name was not released. His body will be turned over to the San Diego Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

At about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, the victim was with his 18-year-old brother when he was somehow swept into the water off Carlsbad State Beach. An official with the California Department of Parks and Recreation told 10News that the two brothers were on the shoreline of the beach when a giant wave came up and overtook one of the brothers, pulling him out to sea.

The brothers are from Vista. Neither were swimmers, Lopez said.

An intensive search Wednesday night for the victim involving boats, divers and helicopters from city, county and federal agencies, including the Coast Guard, was unsuccessful, Lopez said.

The Coast Guard continued the search overnight, with other agencies resuming their efforts at 5 a.m. Thursday, Lopez said. The victim was presumed drowned, Lopez said.

The stretch of beach where the victim was missing was not patrolled, Lopez said.
