Cabrillo Bridge Re-Opens

Posted Monday, June 2nd 2014 @ 4pm

The landmark Cabrillo Bridge, also known as the Laurel Street bridge, spans Highway 163 in Balboa Park and has been closed to traffic since January. It re-opened Monday afternoon though the renovation project will continue.

The project by Caltrans to strengthen the bridge will continue through the fall, but it is now open for vehicles to drive into Balboa Park.  Since January, only pedestrians and bicyclists had been allowed to use the bridge.

The bridge's seven pedestals are being reinforced with an integrated mesh of steel that will make it safer during an earthquake.

The bridge was first built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, the 100th anniversary of which will be commemorated next year.
