Three people were killed and five injured when a car went off a freeway, hit a power pole and was sheared in half in Oceanside.
The 2000 Honda Prelude, carrying 8 people, was going east on State Route 78 when the driver lost control east of El Camino Real just before 11 p.m.
According to California Highway Patrol, the vehicle went off the road, down an embankment and crashed into a power pole, shearing the vehicle in half.
The 19-year-old driver, a female passenger and a male passenger died at the scene. Two females and three males were taken to area hospitals with moderate to major injuries, CHP said. One person was airlifted to Palomar Hospital. The other four were taken by ambulance to either Palomar Hospital or Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
All the occupants were between 18 and 22 years of age. No names were immediately released.
Officers are investigating whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
