Interstate 805 was closed from 3pm Sunday to 5am Monday as a seven-mile stretch of the freeway was shut down in both directions for 14 hours from the 54 to the 905.
Caltrans says the closure was part of the Carpool and Express Lanes Project in the freeway's median.
In place of the bridge, Caltrans will eventually build a Direct Access Ramp, or DAR. "We call it 'DAR,'" added Berman. "We came up with 'DARmageddon' because everyone already knows what 'Carmageddon' is," referring to the freeway closures in Los Angeles.
The carpool lanes should be open by late 2014.
