The TSA agent was shot and killed by a gunman at Los Angeles International Airport who was then shot and wounded by TSA agents and law enforcement officers. Two other TSA agents were wounded.
The TSA officer killed in the LAX attack has been identified as 39-year-old Gerardo I. Hernandez. The suspect in the shooting at Los Angeles International Airport is Paul Anthony Ciancia, a 23-year-old from Los Angeles, the FBI said. Ciancia suffered non-lethal gunshot wounds when he was shot by LAX cops.
Investigators found materials and information on the suspect expressing anti-federal government sentiment and anger at the Transportation Security Administration, a federal law enforcement official said.
Ciancia was said to have been armed with a high-powered rifle and he opened fire in Terminal 3 at LAX shortly before 9:30am Friday.
Police said he fired at several locations in Terminal 3 before he was shot by police. He was reported in critical condition. The Los Angeles Times earlier had reported that the suspect had been killed.
In addition to evacuating the terminal, police also shut down nearby streets and traffic in a wide area was affected. Flights were immediatety halted after the shooting and flights later began to resume but LAX officials said long delays were expected throughout the day of both departing and arriving flights.
