The woman accused of driving under the influence of prescription drugs when her car ran a red light and plowed into a car at La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue in University City, killing a 77-year-old man, has pleaded not guilty to felony charges against her.
39-year-old Soranon Booppanon has been formally charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of drugs. If convicted, Booppanon could get up to 15 years in prison.
George Matteson, who was 77 years old, was killed. His wife, 74-year-old Betty Matteson was seriously injured and according to prosecutors suffered 14 broken bones.
Deputy Public Defender Sal Tarantino said Booppanon who is an Air Force veteran has serious medical problems.
