(Cleveland) - Sokolowski's University Inn in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood has been named by the James Beard Foundation as an American Classic.
Co-owner Mary Balbier says they are surprised but certainly honored by the prestigious award.
Balbier tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that her family has worked very hard over the decades to make fun, flavorful, and affordable meals for Clevelanders from all walks of life.
She believes they won because the restaurant has always been family run, they serve comfort foods, it's not a fancy eatery, and appeals to everyone from steelworkers to CEO's.
Balbier says Salisbury steak and stuffed cabbage are their most popular items.
But several patrons told WTAM that their favorites are Cod, Perch, and periogies, and kielbasa.
Sokolowski's specializes in serving classic ethic food and dates back to 1923.
