Running into some strong spider webs?
If you notice some unusually strong spider webs, with no pattern or regular shape to them - you probably have black widow spiders, or possibly the new brown widow spiders that have invaded our area.  They both have dangerous bites, and will usually be found hanging in their webs at night.  During the day they retreat to a safe, dark location - especially liking garages.  Call Corky’s today to get rid of this unwanted guest!

Questions and Answers

What is “organic” pest control? Is it safe for kids living in the home?
Organic (now usually referred to as “green”) pest control systems protect the landscape environment from insect pests primarily through the use of biological and cultural practices such as habitat management; beneficial organism releases; sanitation; and timing. Some natural substances, such as botanicals and a few synthetic pesticides are permitted when used according to certain restrictions.

In this health-conscious age, many of our customers are concerned with adding chemicals to their home and landscape environment. At Corky’s, we try to assess each homeowner’s pest control situation and use the best environmentally sound technology possible. Most of our services involve low-impact formulations (defined as “those that are of reduced risk to humans and pets”), but for our most concerned customers we can also offer some botanical treatment services.

Be aware that there is no totally “safe” pest control product–kids could be allergic to the plants that some botanicals are derived from, or react for other reasons.

I found a strange bug that looks like a small furry wasp or dragonfly. What is it?
What you found is considered a beneficial insect–a robber fly. They are one of the larger flies in our area at around 5/8th inch in size. They are known to have a large appetite for spiders, wasps, bees, flies, and even grasshoppers and some worms. Their larvae will also feed on other insect eggs and small insects. Don’t swat them–they are doing some good in your landscaping!

Are Argentine Ants taking over the world?
Recent scientific studies have show that Argentine Ants are able to develop “super colonies” that can cover hundreds and even thousands of miles of territory. Now the latest studies show all of these super-colonies are related. This means that all the ants in those colonies get along with each other, and will fight off smaller ant colonies, even those of other Argentine Ants. The three largest colonies are found in Europe (3,700 miles); California (560 miles); and a slightly smaller one in Japan. These ants now number in the billions, and include large areas of San Diego County. It is quite likely that humans are responsible for the rapid spread of Argentine Ants, carrying them to all of the continents except Antarctica.

Can wasps burrow through drywall in a house?
You probably are seeing Yellow Jackets in your house. They are not likely to go through the drywall, but are very adept at finding small openings to get inside, where they would love to build a nest. A careful inspection will probably figure out just where they are entering. Paper Wasps may also try to get inside, but they are usually satisfied building a nest under your eaves.
