The science of Behavior modification rests on the principle that people can change. Whether using positive reinforcement, a reward for example, or employing negative tactics such as punishment, like zapping them or making them watch Keith Olbermann. The question is..do they really change?

It seems that there are two camps here.There are those who  think people can change. That the sum of their life experiences acts as a catalyst for such change. On the other hand, there are those who choose a path that supports the status quo.

I guess we'll really never really know if people can change. But it doesn't mean we can't keep experimenting. OK, now put the collar on Bill Maher.

A new study says that indoor tanning can be addictive. I kid you not. Researchers surveyed 400 college students about their indoor "tanning habits" and found that 30 to 40 percent were "tanning addicts." Addicts? Really?

I don't know if indoor tanning is unhealthy, I just know that I live in San Diego, and there are dozens of indoor tanning salons right here. Now, that is a real tribute to marketing. One of them is even called, "Sunny San Diego." Thats makes selling ice cubes to Eskimos look like cake. How do you sell sun in a city that’s sunny 340 days a year? Put these guys on Obama’s economic team.

There is another aspect to the tanning craze called a spray tan. This is somewhat safer, but I don’t know. It works like this. Pay 40 bucks and some gang banger tags your face for 20 minutes till you end up looking like George Hamilton.

So if you're a college student and you're worried that you might be a tanning addict, get a sponsor and remember, one day at a time. Preferably, in the shade.

I just had a physical. They took my blood, my blood pressure, my pulse, and collected a couple of other things you don't want to hear about, they listened to my heart, checked my colon, my esophagus, my reflexes, and after all that said I'm in great shape. Ya know, for an 80 year old coal miner.

I do everything I'm asked. I brush three times a day, work-out, eat fruits and vegetables, no red meat, and watch my weight. But every day I read about perfectly healthy people dropping dead while jogging. That's not right.

If I'm gonna go like that, I wanna make sure it's with a smile on my face, not like Jim Fixx,  having his heart blow up at five am on some high school track with a gnarly grimace on his face.

In my perfect world, every mile I run should equate to a cold beer and chili dog. But unfortunately it's nowhere near that.

Have you ever checked the calorie chart on a stairmaster. I worked out the other day for 30 minutes. 110 calories. 110. I heard you burn 80 having sex. I wonder how many if you have it on a stairmaster?

The death penalty is one of those “no middle-ground” issues. For example, I oppose the death penalty. Well, for me.It appears as though the Supreme court will soon decide on whether we should be executing people, and if so, how.

First, a little history. Did you know that in the battle over whether to establish AC or DC current, Thomas Edison, who backed DC, arrangned the first electric chair execution using AC, and the guys head caught on fire. He thought this would turn people off. Obviously, he didn’t understand human nature. Today, that’d have a billion hits on You Tube.

I never understood Florida’s death penalty, where they kill you at dawn. That seems cruel. Midnight makes more sense. It’s poetic; end of a day, end of a life. Dawn, that’s like ...teasing you. I can see the guy the night before..”I better hit the rack, I have a short day tomorrow.”

The inventor of Red Bull died the other day. Actually, he died five years ago but that stuff is the bomb.I don’t drink energy drinks because I don’t want them to interfere with the buzz from my 11 cups of coffee. Concentrated sugar and caffeine with enough kick to bring Michael Jackson back is the best way I can describe Red Bull, Monster, Rock Star, to name a few.

My favorite energy drink however, is not the one marketed to pimply 19 year olds pulling an all-nighter. No, it’s one called Five hour energy drink. This zip in a bottle is aimed at the dissatisfied yuppie whose having a mid-day crash at his dead end job. Not sure how amping up his heart rate makes him a better worker. Seems like it may have the opposite effect. Hey Hank. How was lunch? What’s with the automatic weapon? Here’s something I thought I’d never say. Maybe we do need a few more Starbucks.
