A British man has followed in Angelina Jolie's footsteps, getting his prostate removed after testing positive for the BRCA2 gene. The Institute of Cancer Research estimates that guys carrying the gene are 8.6 times more likely than noncarriers to develop cancer, so the London businessman made medical history by having his nearly perfectly healthy prostate removed. How did docs justify the operation? The patient was already showing microscopic malignant changes. The surgeon admits that “the relatively low level of cancerous cells we found in this man's prostate before the operation would … not normally prompt immediate surgery," but with the added BRCA2 intelligence, he says it was "definitely the right thing to do for this patient."
