What is Marine Corps boot camp really like? According to an email that a current recruit sent to a bunch of his friends, it's a lot of being called a "faggot" by your drill instructors. And, if you happen to be brown-skinned, a lot of being called "terrorist." Not to mention "beast mode" workouts.

After the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" act banning gays in the military was repealed in 2011, the Marine Corps' top officer, Gen. John Amos (who argued against the repeal) said he was "very pleased with how it has gone." The Marine Corps even brought the media along to a recruiting event at a gay rights center. But the current reality does not appear to be so loving for cadets.

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego man whose sister’s home was destroyed by the massive tornado that roared through Oklahoma had some tense moments Monday afternoon waiting to hear if his sibling and her teenage daughter survived the storm.

Family members called Heather Sala some 20 times without reaching her, said Sean Sala, who lives in North Park.

The family knew Heather’s daughter, Mackenzie, was OK because the teen had posted on Facebook, but her message asked if anyone know where her mother was. That worried Sean Sala and his relatives.

We still have no idea what was in the mug Kid Rock carried onstage with him at Sunday night's Billboard Music Awards, but we do know that his comments weren't on the teleprompter. The camo-vest-wearing Rock was at the show to announce the top rap song of the year (it went to Macklemore's "Thrift Shop," which has probably been in your head for the past six months) when he said, "Let's give it up for people lip-syncing under prerecorded music!" So who was Rock slamming? He's not saying, but the best guesses so far are Chris Brown, Selena Gomez or Christina Aguilera and Pitbull. Given that list of potentially dissed — and perpetually lip-syncing — performers, we have to agree with Rock.

A British man has followed in Angelina Jolie's footsteps, getting his prostate removed after testing positive for the BRCA2 gene. The Institute of Cancer Research estimates that guys carrying the gene are 8.6 times more likely than noncarriers to develop cancer, so the London businessman made medical history by having his nearly perfectly healthy prostate removed. How did docs justify the operation? The patient was already showing microscopic malignant changes. The surgeon admits that “the relatively low level of cancerous cells we found in this man's prostate before the operation would … not normally prompt immediate surgery," but with the added BRCA2 intelligence, he says it was "definitely the right thing to do for this patient."
