Ask people who live in San Diego if they’ve ever driven on the South Bay Expressway, and most of them would say no.  And a lot of them would probably say they’ve never even heard of it.

The South Bay Expressway.is actually a tollway that runs from Spring Valley south to Chula Vista and ends near the Mexican border.

It’s unusual because it’s the only tollway in San Diego County, but it’s not unusual when you compare it to the 71 and other tollways up in Orange County.

Not a lot of drivers use them and the revenue from the tolls is not paying for them.

State Treasurer Bill Lockyerhas even begun an investigation into Orange County’s tollways to see if they make sense in California.

The South Bay Expressway Tollway must not be bringing in much money.  You hardly see any cars using it despite lowered toll rates.

And there’s often a CHP speed trap set up on the South Bay Expressway Tollway, which could very well be a sign the state has found a way to make a little more money from the little used tollway.

Californians may love their
cars, but they apparently are not too crazy about tollways.
