WHAT ABSOLUTELY BUGS YOU THE MOST IN YOUR OFFICE?
My executive producer, Mary Ayala, is an olfactory anomaly. She can smell perfume in the building next door. She is constantly accusing me of “marinating in something cologne-like.” I NEVER wear cologne and do not own any.
Just today, I was cooking some fresh fish in the kitchen here and she totally busted me for “warming up” some crappy leftover fish. I did not…it was NEW fish.
In any case, I did stink up the place…busted, guilty as charged.
So it begs to ask the question:
WHAT ABSOLUTELY BUGS YOU THE MOST IN YOUR OFFICE? WHAT ARE YOUR TOP OFFICE PET PEEVES?
Some other guy did it. “People not taking ownership for their actions” tops the list of workplace pet peeves for Americans and the world.
A new global survey by social networking site LinkedIn found that in the U.S., rounding out the top three office peeves are “constant complainers” and “dirty common areas” including community microwaves or refrigerators.
Busted.
“People not taking ownership for their actions” was also the most common pet peeve globally, chosen by 78 percent of total respondents.
But not all pet-peeves are equal when it comes to gender, the survey found.
WHAT ABSOLUTELY BUGS YOU THE MOST IN YOUR OFFICE? WHAT ARE YOUR TOP OFFICE PET PEEVES?
Cologne? B.O.? Loud talkers? Close talkers? Somebody tell me one that happened just today…!
In the U.S. women reported being more annoyed than men by “clothing that’s too revealing for the workplace.” That bothered only 29 percent of the men surveyed, but 62 percent of women.
LinkedIn conducted the research in 16 countries and collected data from 17,653 professionals . In the U.S., LinkedIn surveyed 1,953 people.
The office pet peeve that bothered hiring managers (65 percent) more than non-hiring managers (55 percent) in the U.S. was “showing up late for meetings.”
American professionals are more peeved than professionals in other countries when it comes to taking food from the refrigerator that isn’t yours, and the U.S. was the eighth most peeved-out country in this regard.
Again, worldwide, the thing that office workers hate more than anything else is . . . when coworkers don't take ownership for their actions.
--The next four biggest pet peeves are:
People who complain all the time, dirty common areas, meetings that start late or run long, and people who don't respond to email.
--There were big differences by country. Like the nation of deliciously chubby people that we are, two in three Americans complained about people stealing their food from the office fridge. That was about 13% higher than the rest of the world.
--One in three people worldwide hate overly revealing clothes in the office. Twice as many women as men listed revealing clothes as a pet peeve.
--Japanese workers were twice as likely as the rest of the world to complain about office pranks. Employees in India were 23% more annoyed by their coworkers' ringtones than the rest of the planet.
--In general, Indian workers were the grumpiest. Of the 38 behaviors listed, the average Indian worker complained about 19 of them. Italian workers were the most laid back. On average, they only listed 15 pet peeves. GIDDY UP!
