Santa Barbara, who also holds the record for being the oldest person on
Facebook, is not slowing down despite her advancing years.
oldest driver in California after passing her test to renew her license on
Wednesday - which she described as “…a 'snap'.”
There
comes a time when some people should not drive anymore for safety reasons.
The
California Department of Motor Vehicles says when you reach age 70, you
have to re-test every five years to keep your drivers license. The DMV says
passing a written test and eye exam is enough, no driving test is
required.
What I am
talking about is just tightening up the re-licensing of elderly people.
If they are fit to drive, they should be able to. If they
are not, they should have their licenses pulled.
It
is time we ask physicians to participate in approving THE ELDERLY to
drive?
By 2028, there will be 31 million
drivers over the age of 75 on the road. The projection is that many of us will
die behind the wheel.
So let's get these old folks off
the road and out of the way so the highways will be less crowded for the rest of
us.
JUST A
FEW MONTHS BACK…
My
daughter, Makenna, was at the Fashion Valley Mall on a Saturday afternoon and
witnessed something VERY scary.
According
to San Diego police, an elderly couple in a BMW SUV was trying to leave a
parking spot on the third level of the structure near Neiman Marcus.
Police
said the driver, a 78-year-old man, was trying to back out of the spot when a
passing car honked, so he pulled back into the spot to let the car
pass.
The
driver tried backing out again and another car honked, so the driver tried to
pull back into the parking spot. Police said the driver accidentally hit the gas
pedal instead of the brake, causing the SUV to crash through the
guardrail.
The SUV
went off the structure, hit two parked vehicles on the ground and rolled over
onto its roof.
THIS IS
THE 3RD STORY IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS LIKE THIS!!! [The most recent
being the Comic-Con traffic accident victim by an elderly
driver…]

Bottom
line - we need to change the way we hand out driver’s licenses to "mature" (read
that as elderly) drivers.
Their
reflexes, vision, and mental status change frequently as they age as a result of
medical problems, medications and just normal aging.

For years, lawmakers, senior
advocates and the children of elderly parents have debated the need for
retesting older drivers. Now that seniors have longer life expectancies, and
Baby Boomers are beginning to age, more and more older drivers are on the road.
The Federal
Highway Administration states that in 2007 there were more
than 20 million licensed drivers 70 and older in the United States. Statistics
also show that the total annual miles older drivers traveled climbed 29 percent
from 1995 to 2001.
According
to the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration aging affects elderly drivers in a
number of ways: "Safe elderly drivers require the complex coordination
of many different skills. The physical and mental changes that accompany aging
can diminish the abilities of elderly drivers. These include: a slowdown in
response time; a loss of clarity in vision and hearing; a loss of muscle
strength and flexibility; drowsiness due to medications; and a reduction in the
ability to focus or concentrate."
